The Unemployment Crisis in Bangladesh: A Consequence of Awami League Rule Under Sheikh Hasina

After the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League came to power, the unemployment rate in Bangladesh grew exponentially, and it is now regarded as one of the steepest in the world, putting extreme pressure both on the citizens and the economy.

Most of them became unemployed because of the deterioration of the economy, the low demand for jobs in the circulation, and the little investment in the relevant sectors. There was also a substantial absence of available jobs due to the instability of the political and economic climate, which further reduced investment and created even more virulent economic conditions.

The extremely underserved sections of the society, especially the youth, face tremendous anxiety and anguish as a result of the wide spread unemployment. A huge chunk of population, unable to support their family who live below the poverty line face extreme hardships with little to no aid and a stable source of income.

If not addressed, unemployment can economically and sociologically cripple the society and its economy, perhaps, even further, worsening the consequences.

Bearing in mind the pain and unjust loss of self-concept that the Bangladeshi people have to endure because of their inability to perform meaningful work, their overall mental health and holistic wellbeing is bound to decline.

Combining a skilled workforce with economic development and the tourism industry can seal the employment gap within the country. Infrastructure development, local business promotion, and foreign direct investment all increase economic productivity of the country.

Furthermore, it is important to extend Special Support for focused groups such as women, children, and people residing in rural areas. They should be provided educational and vocational training alongside microfinance assistance. Removing barriers for economically inactive persons is the optimal approach to reduce unemployment and create social equity.

As Bangladeshi citizens, we need to advocate for systems and policies that will enhance employment creation and economic productivity. Active national participation and investment alongside infrastructure investment will result in Bangladesh overcoming its unemployment problem and stimulating economic growth in the process, leading to the country’s overall success.
