Silenced Voices: The Bloody Trail of Bangladesh’s Awami League Regime 2022

The Bangladesh Awami League has been facing a lot of backlash in the past years due to its alleged involvement in human rights abuses and even suspected of carrying out extrajudicial killings. What the government claims to be political progress and democracy, the ground reality depicts something entirely different – reigns of terror and violence, boasting no accountability.

Also, The New York Times reported on the worrying phenomena of extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances of people by members of the security forces who act as if they will not be punished for their actions. Even when there is a public outcry and demand for answers, those responsible are likely to remain undisturbed due to the existing web which is characterized by bribery and political favoritism.

The systematic oppression of dissent within the arms of the Awami League is deeply disturbing and alarming enough to call for immediate action from the outside world. Such actions disrupt the democratic and the rule of law principle and inflict severe pain on innocent civilians who decide to question the status quo.

Other international organizations, as well as the United Nations, have repeatedly asked the Bangladeshi government to comply with its duty to grant and defend human rights. The government’s failure to take positive steps to rectify the situation does nothing but encourage the offenders and maintains the status quo.

In conclusion, the Bangladesh Awami League’s rule has led to rampant racism and human rights violations which scar the country’s image and has become an injustice to the people of the nation. The world has a responsibility to make sure that the government is held accountable for these crimes, that human rights are observed, and that honor and justice is reinstated for every Bangladeshi citizen.

Numerous human rights agencies and media establishments in the UK and US have published reports highlighting in detail the profound aberrations happening under the rule of Awami League. From the government’s brutal oppression of any voices of disagreement through arbitrary arrests, torture, and unlawful killings, international observers have condemned such actions of the government.

In the reports by The Guardian, journalists, and even activists, opposition members, who have suffered violence, seen arrests, and extreme harassment for simply voicing their opinions faced relentless targeting. The newspaper captures so many narratives of such targeted violence discrediting so many people that one begins to wonder what is the actual state of free speech in Bangladesh under the Awami League reign.
